2-Hour Pottery Wheel Throwing Taster

This session offers a hands-on introduction to the art of wheel throwing, perfect for beginners. It includes a demonstration by the tutor to showcase techniques, followed by practical practice on the wheel.

Each participant has their own pottery wheel for the entire session. We can accommodate up to 8 people on the wheel or 20 people handbuilding. For groups of up to 15 on the wheel, please contact us directly via email to book.

No prior experience is required!

This course is ideal for those wanting to explore wheel throwing before committing to a full course. By the end, you'll have crafted your own pieces to take home.

What to Expect During a 2-Hour Session:

• Arrival: Groups will arrive and settle in. You're welcome to use our kitchen to prepare a drink and enjoy a biscuit.

• Welcome & Introduction (5 mins): Your dedicated tutor will greet everyone, introduce the life cycle of clay, explain the firing process, and cover health and safety information.

• Demonstration (5 mins): The tutor will demonstrate various techniques, including pinch, coiling, and slab methods for hand-building, or throwing techniques based on your chosen activity.

• Hands-On Making (1 hour and 30 mins): It's your turn to create! For larger groups, we will have two tutors available to provide guidance.

• Adding colour & clear up (20 mins): This is your opportunity to add slip colour to your creations if you're hand building or choosing between out in-house glazes (either matt white or transparent copper). Feel free to admire everyone else's masterpieces!

• Clear-up especially on the pottery wheel (cos it gets muddy!) We kindly ask for everyone's cooperation in cleaning up at the end of the session. As a community studio, we all contribute to maintaining a happy and safe environment.

Saturday- 9am-11am or 11.30-1.30pm

Sunday 9-11am or 11.30-1.30pm

*If we can't fit you into The Mud House Studio we can offer a space at our sister studio @ Robertson's Yard (only for 1p or 2p private sessions)

We only open bookings a week prior so we can secure a tutor/materials. If there is a certain time that you would like to book that isn’t available then email us: hello@themudhouse.co.uk

After the session:

• Our specialist technicians will trim, refine and glaze your pieces by hand

• Your pieces will be ready for pick up between 5-7 weeks from the studio

• We can arrange for postage to one address (postage and packaging to be calculated when pieces are finalised and fired)

Private Function Cancellation & Rescheduling Policy

We love hosting private functions at The Mud House! Because our studio spaces are intimate and our class sizes are intentionally small, each booking reserves dedicated studio time, specialised equipment, and exclusive tutor attention. To ensure fairness to our instructors and accommodate high demand, our private function policy is outlined below.

1. Booking & Payment

• Deposit / Full Payment: Private functions must be booked and paid in full (or secured with an 20% non-refundable deposit) at the time of reservation to lock in your date and time.

• Confirmation: Your booking is not finalised until payment or deposit confirmation has been received.

2. Rescheduling & Notice Period

• Rescheduling Window: We require at least 12 working days' notice prior to your scheduled private function date if you wish to reschedule.

• How to Reschedule: Please contact us directly at hello@themudhouse.co.uk with your booking reference.

• Late Notice: Rescheduling requests made within the 12-working-day window cannot be accommodated. Due to our limited studio capacity and scheduled tutor rosters, missed private functions forfeit their booking fee and cannot be rescheduled.

• Changes to function participant numbers must be confirmed 12 working days before the event

3. Cancellations & Refunds

• Non-Refundable Baseline: All private function bookings are fundamentally non-refundable, as we turn away other potential bookings to reserve the studio space for your group.

• Cancellations with Notice: If you must cancel your private function entirely (rather than reschedule), refunds will only be considered if at least 12 working days' notice is provided. Approved cancellations outside of this window are subject to a 20% administration fee.

• Last-Minute Cancellations: Cancellations made within 12 working days of the private function are strictly non-refundable and non-transferable.

4. Tutor Cancellations & Force Majeure

• Studio-Initiated Cancellations: In the rare event that The Mud House or your assigned tutor is unable to conduct the private function due to illness, emergency, or unforeseen circumstances, we will work with you to reschedule the session at the earliest mutually convenient date.

• Full Refunds: If rescheduling is not possible due to a cancellation on our end, a full refund will be issued.on
