All Levels - Chanakarn 'Punch' Guest Artist - Sculptural Lidded Jar/ sculptural vessel (2 day)

Greetings, I’m Chanakarn Semachai, also known as Punch.

In this 2-day hands-on workshop, I’ll guide you through crafting my signature sculptural lidded jar. Where pottery meets sculpture to infuse functional pieces with playfulness and joy.

We’ll dive straight in with a demonstration, and throughout our time together I’ll share the story behind my work, the inspiration behind my forms, and how these choices shape the illustrated surfaces. Feel free to ask questions as we go. I love an open, relaxed conversation while we work.

August 15th 10-4pm

• Demo: Building a vessel using hand-building techniques

• Introducing sculptural parts: characters, clouds, finials, knobs, handles, flowers, and more

• Cutting and fitting the lid

• Detailing the lid and vessel

• Hands-on Workshop (Part I):

• Building a closed form vessel using coil building

• Decorating with sculptural parts, adding narrative and personality to functional objects

August 16th 10-4pm

• Demo  20–30 minutes:

• Surface decoration using underglaze techniques: water coloring, sgraffito, wash, and underglaze pencil

• How to layer and combine these methods to build illustrated surfaces with depth and character

• Decorating lidded jars specifically. Including shrinkage, lid fit, and what to watch out for when firing so lids and surfaces come through the kiln just as intended

• Hands-on Workshop (Part II):

• Decorating with sculptural parts (continued)

• Cutting and fitting the lid

• Detailing the lid and vessel

By the end of the workshop you’ll be able to:

• Build a sculptural lidded jar from start to finish

• Decorate confidently using multiple underglaze techniques

• Apply these skills to develop your own sculptural vessel designs
