Join our 8-week Wheel Throwing Course, tailored for both beginners and those looking to improve their skills!


Workshop Description

This engaging program will immerse you in the art of pottery, covering key techniques and essential skills, including clay preparation, safety practices, and wheel throwing fundamentals.

Level 1: You'll learn to create cylinders, bowls As well as techniques for trimming and glazing to finish your pieces beautifully.

Level 2: You should have completed a throwing course at a beginner level either at TMH or similar. You will learn more about complex forms, throwing with intention and repetition, throwing larger pieces and attaching larger pieces.

With a class limited to just 8 participants, you’ll receive plenty of guidance and support from our experienced staff.

Included in the course are all the materials, tools, clay, and refreshments (including biscuits!).

Course Highlights:

  • Studio Setup & Safety: Master the essential safety practices for navigating the pottery studio.

  • Materials & Equipment: Familiarize yourself with the clay, tools, and equipment you'll be using.

  • Basic Throwing Techniques: Gain confidence in creating unique forms on the wheel.

  • Glazing Fundamentals: Discover how to glaze your pieces to bring them to life.

  • Show and Tell Evening: Celebrate your progress by showcasing your creations while enjoying refreshments with fellow students!

  • Each 2.5hr session includes 15-20 minutes clean up which is crucial in the pottery world. It ensures students and team members can work in a safe and healthy studio)

  • If you finish earlier than expected you are welcome to continue working and using the space

  • Any pots that are kept will be charged at a rate of 10£ per kilo of work (weighed at pick up)

Your completed pieces will be ready for collection within 5-6 weeks, depending on the weather!

Course Outline

Our 8-week course is structured into three main sections: LEARN & EXPLORE

LEARN (Weeks 1-4): Introduction to the clay process, including health and safety, firing cycles, and foundational throwing techniques such as making cylinders and bowls. Trimming, refining, attaching, decorative techniques, and finishing with glazing and testing.

EXPLORE (Weeks 4-7): Explore techniques learnt in addition to attaching components like spouts and handles, and creating lidded pots.

Glaze (Weeks 8): Designing and making your own project using the techniques learned, finishing with glazing.

Sessions are 2.5 hours each (some may be shorter depending on progress, but you’re welcome to continue using the space if this occurs. We always finish with at least 20 minutes for cleaning).

Cost

Daytime Course: £280 (8 sessions) Inc VAT

Evening & Weekend Courses: £350 per person (8 sessions) Inc VAT

Any pots that are kept & fired will be charged at a rate of 10£ per kilo of work (weighed at pick up)
