We categorize our pottery skill levels into three distinct levels to cater to your individual learning needs:
Level 0:
This is our most basic level, designed for complete beginners.
It includes all Drop-in classes and any beginner weekend intensives or one-off courses.
Level 1:
This level is the minimum requirement to join as a member at The Mud House.
It includes our 6-week or 8-week foundational courses, where you'll learn essential pottery skills and techniques.
Level 2:
Ideal for members looking to further develop their skills, this level focuses on improvement.
It includes 8-week improver classes for both hand building and wheel throwing, perfect for those looking to refine their techniques.

4-Week Throwing Course
Dive into the art of pottery with our 4-week Express Throwing Course! This course focuses on the essentials of throwing, turning, attaching handles & glazing (16 yrs+ only). This is perfect for those who want to cover all aspects from throwing to glazing- then to join as a member!With a class limited to just 8 participants, you’ll receive plenty of guidance and support from our experienced staff.
Included in the course are all the materials, tools, clay, and refreshments (including biscuits!).
Course Highlights:
Studio set-up & safety procedures
Introduction to clay, tools, and equipment
Hands-on experience with throwing and turning techniques
During the final session, Learn to attach handles for a professional finish & choose from 3 types of glaze and use slips for decoration (we'll glaze your pieces for you!)
Each 2.5hr session includes 15-20 minutes clean up which is crucial in the pottery world. It ensures students and team members can work in a safe and healthy studio)
If you finish earlier than expected you are welcome to continue working and using the space
Any pots that are kept will be charged at a rate of 10£ per kilo of work (weighed at pick up)
Your completed pieces will be ready for collection within 5-6 weeks, depending on the weather!
Refund Policy
This course must be booked and paid in full. Due to limited space, we unfortunately cannot offer full refunds for cancellations. However, we understand that life happens! Our refund policy is as follows:A 10% admin fee applies to all cancellations.
Cancel up to 3 weeks before the class for an 80% refund.
Cancel 2 weeks before the class for a 40% refund.
Cancellations after this period will not be refunded.
You may transfer your booking to another name but cannot transfer to a different class.
If the tutor is unable to run a particular session, a catch-up session will be arranged.
Should the course be cancelled by the tutor, a full refund will be provided.
Absence during the course
Due to the nature of the course and set-up it is difficult to reschedule certain sessions. Please be aware this is a small business & pottery is a time sensitive process so in some cases rescheduling is not possible - If we are able to accommodate we will arrange another session.

Our 4-week course is designed to focus on key ceramic techniques, providing a solid foundation in Throwing and finishing:
Week 1: Creating Cylinders
Learn how to throw and shape cylindersWeek 2: Making Bowls
Focus on shaping and refining bowl formsWeek 3: Trimming, Refining, and Attaching Handles
Practice trimming your pieces, refining their shape, and attaching handles for functional and simple decorative effects.Week 4: Glazing and Finishing
Complete your pieces with glazing techniques, and learn about finishing touches to enhance your work.
Sessions: 2.5 hours each (some may be shorter depending on progress, but you’re welcome to continue using the space if this occurs. We always finish with at least 20 minutes for cleaning).

Our 6-week Wheel Throwing Course is designed to build your skills from the ground up and help you create a variety of functional pottery pieces:
Week 1: Introduction to Wheel Throwing
Learn the basics of centering clay, shaping simple forms, and understanding the wheel’s mechanics.Week 2: Making Cylinders and Basic Forms
Practice throwing cylinders, cups, and bowls, focusing on symmetry and control.Week 3: Trimming and Refining

Our 6-week "Everything" Ceramic Course covers a wide range of techniques, guiding you through the entire process from handbuilding to wheel throwing and finishing:
Session 1: Introduction to ceramics and basic handbuilding techniques
Explore the ceramic process with a mini pinch, coil, and slab project to get comfortable with clay forms.Session 2: Personal project development
Start forming your own piece using any handbuilding technique of your choice, developing your creative idea.Session 3: Decorating and surface techniques
Learn trimming, and decorate your piece using slips, carving, or etching to add texture and detail.Session 4: Wheel throwing fundamentals

IMPLEMENT (Weeks 10-12): Designing and creating your own project, then glazing it.

(Level 02 Course) Join our Weekend Intensive Pottery Wheel Course designed for improvers who have completed a Level 0 or Level 1 course.
This is limited to 8 people within the class so lots of guidance for all students :)
This include all tuition, clay, tools, materials & refreshments inc biscuits 😉
Additional firing costs at £10 per kilo of work
Course includes:Studio set-up & safety
Learn about clay, tools & equipment
Learn basic throwing & trimming techniques (more complex techniques in the Level 2 course)
Practical fun on the pottery wheel
Our team will look after and glaze your pots! you will have a choice of 3 kinds of glazes
Each 2.5hr session includes 15-20 minutes clean up which is crucial in the pottery world. It ensures students and team members can work in a safe and healthy studio)
If you finish earlier than expected you are welcome to continue working and using the space
Any pots that are kept will be charged at a rate of 10£ per kilo of work (weighed at pick up)
You will be able to take home your masterpieces- which should be ready for collection within 3 weeks depending on the weather!
Refund Policy
This course must be booked and paid in full.
Unfortunately, because of limited space we're unable to offer full refunds for cancellations, however we do understand that life gets in the way sometimes. If you wish to cancel you will be refunded as follow:
Any cancellation includes a 10% admin fee.
If you cancel up to to 3 weeks before the class - 80% refund.
If you cancel 2 week before the class - 40% refund.
Cancellations after this period will not be refunded.
If you can’t attend you may transfer the booking to another name. No refunds will be available if you fail to attend.
You may not transfer from one class to another.
If the tutor is unable to run a particular session I will arrange a catch up session as agreed with the rest of the group.
If for any reason the tutor is unable to run the course you will be refunded in full.

Weekend Wheel Throwing Course
Saturday: Wheel Throwing & Form Development
Duration: 4 hoursIntroduction to wheel throwing techniques
Centering clay on the wheel
Throwing basic forms: cylinders and bowls
Developing control and consistency in shaping forms
Experimenting with different sizes and shapes
Tips for handling and manipulating the clay during throwing
Sunday: Trimming, Attaching Handles, Decorating & Additional Throwing
Duration: 4 hoursTrimming and refining your thrown pieces for a polished finish
Attaching handles, feet, or decorative elements
Surface decoration techniques such as slips, carving, or etching
If time allows, additional throwing practice or creating more complex forms
We will glaze your pieces ready in 3-4 weeks time!
